Why Photoelectric Is the Alarm Worth Having

Here's a stat that changed how we think about this job: most fatal house fires in New Zealand don't start with a bang. They start with a smoulder — a heater too close to the washing, a phone charger under a pillow, a pot left on low. The smoke builds slowly, quietly, usually at night. And the old-style ionisation alarms that are still stuck to thousands of Christchurch ceilings are the slowest type to react to exactly that kind of fire.

Photoelectric alarms use a small light beam that smoke particles scatter. Thick, slow smoke sets them off early — often while the fire is still small enough to put out with a bucket. That head start is the entire point of owning a smoke alarm.

There's a second, less dramatic reason we only fit photoelectric: they don't punish you for cooking. Ionisation alarms near a kitchen go off for burnt toast, a hot pan, sometimes a decent fry-up. After the tenth false alarm, the battery comes out "just for now" — and now the house has a decoration on the ceiling instead of an alarm. Photoelectric units mostly leave your cooking alone, which means they stay working.

What an Install Visit Looks Like

We turn up when we said we would, walk the house with you, and talk through where alarms should go — every bedroom, the hallway outside them, living areas, and one on each level. Older Christchurch homes throw up quirks all the time: high stud ceilings in St Albans villas, long L-shaped hallways in 60s brick homes, converted garages with a bed in them. Placement is where the local experience earns its keep.

  • Quality long-life photoelectric alarms with sealed 10-year batteries
  • Placement planned room by room, not just "wherever's handy"
  • Old alarms taken down and disposed of properly
  • Every unit tested and dated before we leave
  • Fixed price including alarms and GST — from $149 for a single alarm

Good to know: a typical 3-bedroom home needs three alarms for proper coverage. Our whole-home package does exactly that for $389, fitted and tested — see pricing.

Smoke Alarm Questions We Get All the Time

The old ionisation alarms are quick to notice fast, flaming fires but slow — sometimes fatally slow — on smouldering ones. Photoelectric sensors work the other way: they spot the thick smoke from a couch, curtain or charger fire early, often 20 to 30 minutes sooner. Since most fatal house fires start as slow smoulders while everyone's asleep, that's the fire you want your alarm tuned for. They're also far less touchy about cooking, so they don't get unplugged in frustration.

The battery is built into the alarm and lasts its whole 10-year life. There's nothing to replace, so no midnight chirping and no climbing on chairs every year. When the alarm reaches the end of its life, the whole unit gets replaced — and we put a dated sticker on ours so you know exactly when that is.

You can, and honestly a cheap working alarm beats no alarm every time. What you're paying us for is the stuff the box doesn't tell you: which rooms need coverage, where smoke actually travels in your layout, keeping alarms out of false-alarm zones, and quality units we've had zero grief with across thousands of installs. Most of our jobs cost less than a dinner out — and they're done in under an hour.

Yes. Long-life photoelectric alarms are exactly what the Residential Tenancies Act calls for when alarms are replaced or added in a rental. If you're a landlord, our compliance check pairs the right alarms with a written report for your file.
