Where Alarms Go (and Where They Shouldn't)

Half the callouts we do aren't about broken alarms — they're about alarms in the wrong spot. The classic Christchurch bungalow has one lonely alarm in the middle of a long hallway, doing its best to cover four bedrooms through closed doors. Modern doors are solid, and smoke does strange things in a house; an alarm ten metres away behind two doors might as well be in the neighbour's place.

Then there's the opposite problem: the alarm mounted right outside the kitchen that goes off every time the pan gets hot, until someone "fixes" it by pulling the battery. An alarm that cries wolf ends up on top of the fridge — and we've already covered how that story goes.

When we install, we walk the house first. Bedrooms, hallway, living areas, one on each level, away from steamy bathrooms and cooking zones, high on the ceiling where smoke actually collects — but never in the dead-air corner where it doesn't. It takes five extra minutes and it's the difference between an alarm that works on paper and one that wakes your kids at 2am when it counts.
